The Community Centre and Warrandyte

Warrandyte Community Centre was built in 1991 and a year later was awarded the Charles La Trobe Design for Living Award.  The building is an attractive amalgam of inside and outdoor spaces and harmonises with Warrandyte village.

The community centre is on Yarra Street, the village's main thoroughfare. In 1851 Warrandyte, then known as Anderson's Creek, was the site of Victoria's first officially registered gold discovery.  The remains of several mines and two stamping batteries can still be seen a short distance from the Community Centre.

Later, artists, potters and other creative people moved to the district. Many 'Heidelberg School' artists painted in and around Warrandyte, including Clara Southern and Walter Withers. Warrandyte's State Parks, with their many species of native flora, fauna and birds, are open to the public daily.
